The musical road of B.I.G. (short version)…

Straight out of the Bay Area, San Francisco to be specific, are rappers Roach Gigz and Lil 4-Tay, who together form the group Bitch I Go (B.I.G.). The duo stepped on to the Northern California music scene in 2006 with their street smash “I Get It”. The single was the first song they ever recorded together and ended up getting spins on the two biggest hip-hop radio stations in the Bay Area, 106 KMEL and WILD 949. Roach and 4 continued to record song after song with no backing or musical outlet, and without any kind of formal release. Although it seemed as though every young person from San Francisco to Stockton already had most of their songs playing from iPods, car stereos, and phone ring tones, a collection of the groups recordings was eventually put together on the 2008 internet only, free download of their Mistah Fab hosted mixtape “B!tch I Go Vol.1”.

This leads too…

Their latest release, “From Another”. The EP drops on 2/23/2010 at midnight, exclusively online, and again free for fans to download. “From Another” is their first formal CD, and consists of music mostly recorded in 2007 and early 2008, but held out from public ears for an official album that never came. The link and track list are below. Enjoy.

1) M.A.N.G.O.

2) I’m Up (The Drug Song)

3) Smack Ft. D-Lo (Mr. No Hoe)

4) Freezin’

5) My Pistol

6) Cheater

We got a quick interview with the home boy from San Jose, Meko Mcafee. We discussed about his new projects as he is coming back in the game. Be on a look out for his EP “Justifiable Means” coming March 2010.

http://www.myspace.com/mekomakafi
http://twitter.com/mekomcafee

TBM: Alright, Let’s get this interview poppin. What’s good with you Meko? As well and as far as your music?
Meko: I’m good…just grindin’ fam…music’s goin well..fanbase is building..can’t complain.
TBM: Good Looks. Now, you had an anticipated mixtape titled “Justifiable Means” which has now turned into an upcoming EP, tell us a little but about that. What songs made it on the EP? And when is it coming out?
Meko: Yeah..Justifiable Means was a mixtape…but we decided to go with the best of the best and make it a Ep…Now or Never, Loving You, No One, Sleep, Be That Way, Gotta Eat, Justifiable Means, Go Getter and 1 more i havent did yet will be on the ep..No One video already out, Loving You video is part 2 to No One, then i have a video for Now or Never and 1 more for the new song..so 9 songs..4 videos..it should be out March
TBM: Do you feel like this is your best project so far in your Rap career? How would you compare yourself back when you had the hit single “Bay Whomp” Produced by traxamillion in 2006?
Meko: Yes…definitely…its current Meko which makes it better than 2006 Meko…Bay Whomp was a good club banger..but I’m deeper than club banger…this EP is more lyrical…more hip hop based..Iwant to be respected as a spitter…this project is getting’ me that respect just off feedback from joints I’ve leaked from it
TBM: Are there any featured artists on Justifiable Means? What producers did you knock with on this project?
Meko: My man Philthy Produced the whole thing except for one joint I’m gonna get from Hallway Productionz who did joints for Ice Cube and W.C….it’s all me..my man Preast is featured on 1 joint…but it’s all me on this one.
TBM: Are there any specific Bay Area artists or producers you havn’t worked with but willing to work with them in the future? Are there any Mainstream artists you would like to work with?
Meko: I’ve worked with Mr. F.A.B., Messy, Quinn, Mike Marshall, Turf Talk, The Team, Traxamillion, The Federation…but who I’d love to rock with is Rick Rock…that’s my guy right there…love his beats…i wanna work with Drake..He’s inspiring right now…I’d love to rock with Jay-Z of course, Nas, Kanye, E-40… the greats..No new artist doin’ it for me right now but Drake, Laws…oh…I’d love to rock with Jay Electronica as well.
TBM: You have worked with Messy Marv and San Quinn. What are your thoughts on their current beef?
Meko: Ummm…I can’t comment…they were both genuine brothas when I worked with ‘em..it’s something internal I know nothing about so I’ll leave it at that.

TBM: What are your futuristic plans after Justifiable Means releases? What can we expect from Meko Mcafee?
Meko: I got my group The Made EP droppin’…single “Futuristic” buzzin’ in the clubs right now..so that’s a good look..After that EP..Me and Preat got a project called “The Digits” coming out, then hopefully 3rd quarter my album “Mcafee: The Anit-Virus” will be ready.
TBM: What are your views on the West Coast / Bay Area right now? What do you think it will take to bring the West back? What type of rap style do you think we should aim for in order to bring ourselves back on our feet? Should there be more sampling to bring back what Hip-Hop was all about? What about the whole Mob/Gangsta music the bay has gotten back to? What are your views and opinions about our rap scene?
Meko: I think we have to make more music that other regions can relate to..The bay is its own world…but that is hurting us..we gotta let the WHOLE world know about our world..same as L.A. We gotta make more universal music instead of just Gangsta Rap or Hyphy/Mob music…and the other 50% is Dj’s on the west not supporting the west…they rather pump Gucci Mane than someone from the west..not hatin’..just speaking the facts.
TBM: Right on.
Can you briefly explain the messages or stories behind each of the 9 songs that were chosen for the EP and why they were chosen? Do you include messages about the problems we face in today’s world?
Meko: In my songs, I talk about the hustle and the struggle because right now, that’s what it is. The country is economically one of the worst stages it’s ever been in so it’s hard not to think about that. I felt out of all the songs I did these songs were the best ones.
TBM: As a child and teenager growing up, who were you inspired by and how did you get involved in the music industry as a Hip-Hop artist? (Short Bio)
Meko: When I was younger, I was influenced to make music by R&B singers. I was the oldest and my parents didn’t really get into rap. I got into it as I got older. 1st tape I ever bought with my own money was L.L. Cool J’s Walking with a panther and Kool Moe Dee’s Knowledge is Power. I got into it by a child hood friend Willie Rich and just took it from there.
TBM: Were or Are there any other genres of music and artists that you bump besides rap/hip-hop?
Meko: I listen to more oldies than anything because that’s what I grew up listening to.
TBM: Illegal bootlegging and downloading has hurt music artist sales which is the downside of it, the lack of support. On the other hand, it also has its highs because it promotes and spreads the musician’s musical talent in order to build a bigger fan base. What are your thoughts and opinions on bootlegging?
Meko: You said it. Bootlegging is free promotion but it hurts sales. But what I have learned from Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem…etc…Is people still want to support something if they feel its good music. In a recession those cats still sell a lot of records.
TBM: To wrap this interview up, Can you explain about how you got your rap title “Meko Mcafee” and the spelling change you made from Makafi to Mcafee? The pronunciation is the same but won’t this cause confusion?
Meko: My name came from two different events…when I first started rappin’ in 94′ everyone was young this…lil that..So I went by Young Joe back then…I was with Willie Rich who at the time was Young T when he was servin’ a knock (dopefiend…) and the dopefiend asked him what his name was to get a hold of him and Young T told him his name was “Meko”. I thought that was different so I told Rich I was gonna run that..And i did from there on out. As time went on, everyone who knew me called me Mackin Ass Meko or Meko the Mack..So one day I’m on the internet..I think it was 99′ and I seen the Mcafee anti -virus and I was like “hmmm, Meko Makafi”…pronounced the same but spelled different…About a few years ago I changed it to Mcafee…I though it looked more professional…plus people were having a hard time pronouncing Makafi right.
