If we cant all agree on who is the hottest rapper out right now or which artist has the best lyrical game, I think we can all agree that in this overly saturated market it is very hard to come by true originality. There is very few that stand out against the masses that do something that others don’t or simply won’t do.
Not all of these artistically creative individuals are multi-platinum well known artist, not all are big name local rappers either. Some are really up and coming, grinding hard to be known like this cat I came across. His name is Jawdroppa. Maybe he calls himself Jawdroppa because when you hear his sound all you can do is stand there with your mouth to the floor due to uniqueness of his presentation.
I had a few moments to talk with this guy about who he is, what he represents and how hip hop is seen in his eyes.
TheBayMusic.CoM: Hey Jawdroppa what’s up wit it? Can you tell me where your from and when you started rappin?
Jawdroppa: The name is Jawdroppa and I’m from Richmond, Ca. I first started rapping when I was about 13 years old. I was influenced by NWA at that time.
TheBayMusic.CoM: Your fans are saying that this is one of the most creative albums they’re ever heard. Tell me what inspired “The Creation of a Goon Part 1”
Jawdroppa: I wanted to tell a story. I was always a storyteller, even as a child I was intrigued by the art of story telling, so I incorporated that into the making of “The Creation of a Goon Part 1”
TheBayMusic.CoM: Why did you name it “A Creation of a Goon”?
Jawdroppa: A Goon is a monster, or anything perceived as a monster like the godfather or Tony Montana from Scarface. The Goon is a character, a metaphor for the way people like me are looked at.
There was a time where I had to rob & steal jus to make it. I am a villen in society. I am the Goon of the Goons.
TheBayMusic.CoM: What drives you to make this rap thing your career?
Jawdroppa: It started as a creative release, but as you grow up you realize you gotta make money. So, instead of dope dealing & robbing I’d rather use my God given talent to try to make money and do something with my life.
TheBayMusic.CoM: It’s interesting the way you acknowledge hip hop as an art form. It’s obvious how you separate yourself from similar artist. How does an underground lyricist like you make it in today’s ring tone rapper era?
Jawdroppa: Of course with everyone talking about popping bottle, million dollar yachts and trickin on females, that leaves a lot of people isolated. An audience is being overlooked. I can’t lie, it has helped the underground cause rapper are a dime a dozen nowadays. It’s like if you aint bringing uniqueness then it’s gonna be even harder for you. If you focus and think outside of the box you might be that one dude who makes it out of a billion.
TheBayMusic.CoM: Most rappers are chasing radio play. Could this be the reason why lyricists stir up so much attention?
Jawdroppa: I mean that’s what you don’t wanna do; you don’t wanna chase the radio. You got 3 million cats out there sending they demo to the radio and they all following the same format or sounding the same. When you’re trying to bubble and your competing with 3 million other rappers it’s going to be hard to be the change and be heard.
TheBayMusic.CoM: Can you tell me what you think the state of bay area hip hop is at this moment.
Jawdroppa: Yea man, it is one the best times in history to be a rapper from the bay area. I just watched VH1 honor too short the other night. Short was one of the first rappers to have a pimp swag on record and now that’s almost a criteria. I think its embarrassing how people been sleeping on the bay area this long. Its crazy how cats try to say the bay don’t have no lyric game, Tupac came outta Oakland and he’s like the Jesus of rap. Then you got cats like me who you listen to and be like “man I aint never heard nothing like this before” but still don’t get credit as a strong writer in hip hop until recently.
TheBayMusic.CoM: What do you think the state of hip hop is going to be in the future?
Jawdroppa: Cats gonna have to bring it man, cause they have step their game up. The people want to be entertained and the artist that knows how to do that the best will be sought after.
TheBayMusic.CoM: Where do you see yourself in this game in about 5 years?
Jawdroppa: Hopefully in five years I can be considered one of the few rappers that can show people the power of the underground, and be the first underground artist besides Dr. Dre to be a household name and possibly be that paradigm shift of the format, to make it cool to be yourself again. I want to reach and inspire the people who are like me, I know what its like to struggle and nobody thought I would make it to be nothing. If I could do that, I’d be cool.
TheBayMusic.CoM: It was cool speaking with you Jawdroppa; do you have any last words that you want to get out there?
Jawdroppa: Yea man, you can get the single “A Creation of a Goon Part 1” on itunes and napster. I’m thankful for the positive feedback I’m getting out here on the streets. Look out for me while I’m grindin, my album is coming out real soon.
